Located only 5 mins away from the Ponta Delgada port, the Dori wreck is considered one of the best dive sites in Sao Miguel in the Azores. Lying bow down between 9 and 20m deep its stern is facing up to the surface. The wreck was during is glory days sailing under the American flag. it was built during World War II and was one of the few ships to play a part in Operation Overlord along the Normady coastline as well a other wartime missions. It finally sunk in January 1964 800m off of Ponta Delgada and is today an underwater archeological park.
The stern is still fairly intact and is surrounded by clouds of juvenile fish and often large species. Heading down towards the bow divers will appreciate how well intact the rest of the ship is too including large pipes and stairways. The ship boilers and often surrouned by Moroccan white seabream.
