Alligator Reef – Florida Keys

Alligator Reef has one of the largest coral eco-systems in the Upper Keys. En 1960 a scientific study reported over 500 different species living on the reef, named after the USS Alligator. Built in 1820 it sunk during a mission for the American Marines. It had been ordered to protect a convoy of pirates!

Today the dive site is easily recognisable by boat and it lies between 6-22m. Its perfectly accessible for snorkelers and beginnerdivers. With a dense array of marine life and healthy corals, divers can spot angelfish, damselfish, surgeonfish and parrotfish, swimming between the hard corals and gorgonians
