Richelieu Rock

The ONE dive site that you cannot miss if you're diving the West coast of Thailand in general, and the Similan Islands in particular! Ranked amongst the best dive sites in the world, Richelieu Rock is a great place to see some pelagics like whale-sharks and/or manta rays, but also reef sharks and critters like seahorses or brightly coloured nudibranchs... Because it is so isolated, Richelieu Rock accumulates a lot of marine life in one single spot and attracts a large array of tropical fish: there's one thing for sure, you won't be deceived! Be warned that the dive site is liveaboard boats territory and you need a bit of experience to dive it properly.

Located north of the Similan Islands marine Park, right by the Burmese border, Richelieu Rock has a horse-shoe shape sporting a main pinnacle and a few smaller ones. As it spings out of the blue it enjoys rich upwellings flooding the place with plankton: that's how it gets such diversity in fauna as well as flora, and is able to afford the visit of such giants as whale-sharks! Youngsters about 3m long all the way up to adults sizing over 7m, the chances you spot at least one during your trip there are huge! And if whale-sharks aren't paying you a visit you can always count on a few schools of barracudas and jacks and some big groupers. At last, it's not rare to see giant manta rays cruising by and getting cleaned... So keep your eyes peeled for an unforgettable encounter coming from the blue! On the reef itself, there's also a lot to be seen and the macro fauna enthousiasts will be delighted: hairy crabs or microscopic punk shrimps can be found in just about all cracks, fans and soft corals.

Yes, Richelieu Rock is not just a good dive site, it's probably one of the best you can find and that lives up to its reputation! Enjoy!
