The Arches

One of the specificities of doing scuba diving near Port-Louis in Grande Terre is to find quite a few arches.

Unlike its neighbour Basse Terre (to the West), which culminates at the Soufrière volcano around 1400m, Grande Terre is pretty much flat and made of limestone beds. This peculiar geological feature combined with thousands of years of erosion offer divers a maze of arches and odd topographical shapes! From the shore, it slowly slopes down to 8-9m before dropping down rapidly to 20-25m: right there, in the steep slope, will you find caves, arches and swim-thrus!

Turn your torch on and enjoy! A resilient fauna and flora has settled in, sheltered from direct sunlight: sponges, soft coral, bryozoans, Spanish lobsters, crayfish and other crustaceans like the 'Teddy Bear' crab have found a niche. You could also find sleeping stingrays and turtles, but be gentle and use frogkick finning technique to avoid kicking the bottom and silting up the whole place...
