King Cruiser Shipwreck

The ferry King Cruiser sank on the 4th of May 1997, south east of Phuket. It was on its way to Koh Phi Phi, coming from Phuket, when it hit the submerged pinnacle of Anemone Reef, 10 km away from Phi Phi. The impact split the reef in two and literally ripped off the hull! It took the ship 2h30 and another kilometer to go down. All 561 passengers were rescued.

The ferry is 85m long and has become a very popular artficial reef, complementing Anemone Reef. It lies flat on the bottom, 30m deep. The shallowest part of the wreck is around 15m depth. The safest and simplest way to get in is by the stern, where a line connects you to the surface. From there you can check out the car deck. Soft corals cover most of the wreck, attracting a very wide variety of fish: tunas, barracudas, trevallies are residents. The fauna includes lionfish, nudibranchs or moray eels. Occasionally you can encounter much bigger fish, like leopard or bamboo sharks, turtles and whale-sharks!
