Our opinion on Scubaqua Dive Center:
History is everywhere on Sint Eustatius, wherever you might look! The story behind Scubaqua, the best dive center on the island, is no different... Ingrid and Menno, from Switzerland, fall in love with Statia while on holidays in 1998. In 2006 and a few savings later, they give up their jobs and their dive center in Fribourg to open Scubaqua! They were (and still are) doing such a good job that by 2010 they needed to get bigger so they bought over the neighbouring 18th century building; today it is restaured up to historical standards and it gives out an authentic feeling to the dive center.
The concept behind Scubaqua is to transmit the passion, the love for the sea. There's a homely feeling in the daily running of the company; the groups are small and the customer service excellent! We really appreciate the friendly debriefs and the moments spent all together at the end of the days' diving.
Safety procedures are also a real focus. So much so that even the drift dives are done from one mooring line to the other!
Nitrox is free, so you can enjoy the Marine Park for longer! Without it and STENAPA, the local NGO in charge, Statia would not be the paradise it is today. STENAPA protects the natural wonders and some of the most valued archeological treasures in the Caribbean like anchors of Mercy (dive site: Lost Anchor), solidified vessels (well, parts of them!) or the famous and mysterious Blue Beads! Other wrecks, like the legendary cable-runner Charles Brown, are a true delight for UW photographers. Ask the staff to do a night dive on the Chien Tong... it seems like all the turtles in the area agreed to meet here!
Scubaqua offers a varied dive schedule: obviously some wreck diving, traditional reef system, drop-offs, sand and coral bommies. That's enough for a whole semester of diving! All their gear is well-maintained, so you can relax and enjoy the diversity as much as the density of marine life displayed on every dive.
The dive training with PADI goes all the way up till Divemaster, and since Menno is a CMAS National Instructor, you train up to CMAS 4 stars!
You can still look elsewhere and compare, Scubaqua is a true dive center of excellence in the Caribbean: the flawless customer service, the overall safety and the high quality in diving has turned Statia into a necessary destination if you're in search of authenticity.
