DIVING MAYOTTE

Between the east coast of Africa and Madagascar lies the archipelago of the Comores with the island of Mayotte, a French department, at its heart. Mayotte is shaped like a giant seahorse and has actually two main islands, 'Grande-Terre' or Big Land and 'Petite-Terre' or Little Land. Nicknamed the 'Lagoon Island' (it has one of the biggest lagoons in the world with an almost uninterrupted double-barrier reef!), diving there is truly extraordinary and unforgettable. There are only 12 channels, or 'Passes', ranging from 12 to 70 meters in depth, that break the barrier so the conditions are ideal for diving.

We recommend you to go down south around the Sazile Peninsula (south of Boueni) or to the west and dive off the beach of Tsohoa or Mliha, or around the islets of Bandrele, Bambo or Choazil. There you'll find a very colourful and densely packed coral reef coupled with a wide array of tropical fish, in a very safe lagoon! Mayotte has two types of turtles: the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys Imbricata) and the Green (Chelonia Mydas) turtles. Around August Mayotte welcomes transient whales that come here to mate and give birth in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
