Diving Lombok & The Gili Islands

Down the South of Indonesia in the Lesser Sunda archipelago, Lombok is locked in between Bali and Sumbawa. Crowned by the almighty volcano Rinjani, (with its 3726m, it's the country's third highest summit) Lombok is a very rich and welcoming land that attracts more and more tourists every year. More preserved than its neighbour Bali, the island sports some amazing rice fields, tobacco plantations, traditional outdoor markets or old, typical villages, in a very 'old-world' atmosphere. Even its capital city, Mataram, looks like a quiet mid-size town. For the diver, Lombok's main interest is its geographical position: the Lombok Strait, a deep channel that stands between it and Bali, sits on the Wallace Line, which is the frontier between the Indo-malaysian and the Australasian tectonic plates! That translates into a very rich biodiversity, some species are actually endemic to the area. On land, the big mammals are slowly making room for some small specimens of lizards and marsupials, but underwater it's the 'big stuff' that dominates! Different kinds of sharks and beautiful stingrays will tag along on most of your dives... or turtles! If you are into critter diving and photography, Lombok will deliver too with a huge variety of tropical fishes and nudibranchs.

The Gili Islands are a key destination when visiting Lombok ! Vibrant, colourful, creative and over-flowing with energy, Gili Air, Meno and Trawangan won't leave you indifferent, no matter what mood you're into! It's been five years now that the islands went from the 'off-the-beaten-track' to the 'dont-miss-out!' list: more than just a backpackers destination, they attract more and more couples and families. Located to the North West of Lombok, it takes just over 2hrs to reach them from Bali (by SpeedBoat) or from the harbours of Bangsal and Teluk Nare, in about 20 minutes. All three islands have their own personality: Gili Meno is the calm and relaxed island, the smallest one; Gili Air gets more and more popular by the year, sporting some very chilled out bars and restaurants and some great dive centres. At last Gili Trawangan, who has a reputation of a party place, is first and foremost the most diverse island ! Yes, you can party all you want, but you'll also find fine dining, luxury villas, reef restoration programs, a freediving school, yoga classes, innovative backpackers and a lot of dive centres... Trawangan is a diving hub, fringed by a colourful reef, where learning to dive, furthering your dive training or just having fun underwater has become a religion. Don't miss out !

Lombok definitely is a little hidden gem that, we hope, will keep its character and authenticity over the years to come.
