Diving Sudan

Sudan may not necessarily be the destination that we spontaneously think of for vacation, but this country is nevertheless an extraordinary diving destination ! Majority desert, Sudan is also a country of water : it is down at the capital Khartoum, that the Blue Nile meets the White Nile ! Not to mention the country’s nearly 900km of coastline on the Red Sea...

With tourism being barely developed, the Red Sea territory can be credited to that which could be admired more than 50 years ago in Egypt, intact and rich marine life ! And when we dive there today, it is like going back in time... at the time of the World of Silence and underwater life experiences of Commander Cousteau. There are still sheds, saucers, remnants of aquariums, colonized by the quantities of hard and soft corals. You’ll even find an old shark cage lying in 24 meters of water at Sha'ab Rumi ... which is also famous for its schools of hammerhead and gray reef sharks !

Shark lovers will also love to explore beneath Sanganeb Lighthouse, where they will cross beautiful Albimarginatus (silver tip sharks) and many gray reef sharks. But in Sudan, there are also beautiful wrecks including the legendary Umbria. Particularly well preserved, its stocks of ammunition are still in the holds. Here, we also find vehicles and tires ... 3 years ago, it was still possible to discover the Blue Bel Wreck. Sadly, the wreck has sunk of several meters deeper and it no longer visited.

Sudan's legendary diving sites are approached by liveaboard dive boats, in ideal conditions, since there are only a few boats operating in the area, leaving you to appreciate these wonders almost entirely alone ! The trip there is no longer as epic as it used to be and big air companies now serve Sudan from France through Dubaï or Khartoum.

And although the trip there may prove to be epic (airline companies black listed, multiple stops and detours ...), the reward is well worth the efforts. Well, worth.
