Diving Djibouti

Surrounded by Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Yemen, Djibouti is a small republic whose history goes hand-in-hand with many Western countries', started in the middle of the 19th century with... the French ! The country served as a stop on the way to Madagascar or Indochina. As a central hub for both commercial and military purposes, Djibouti got a major port and railway early on. After a long colonial past, the Republic became independent in 1977.

However, the region remains largely militarized... Surrounded, by military bases and desert, the diver is happy to stay under water : chiefly because Djibouti is an absolutely legendary destination in any guide book for diver enthusiasts ! It is, however, a diving destination meant to be earned, because the conditions can be quite challenging, especially in the Seven Brothers region, where wind is often present...

There are 2 main areas for diving:

· Seven Brothers is located in the southern area of the Red Sea. These are small dry islands, adrift, and windswept (particularly in December). Though their surface is completely deserted and inhospitable, beneath the surface, it is a paradise for divers, with abundant pelagic and an incredible concentration of life. These dives are usually organized on a liveaboard dive boat and are for the more experienced diver, not afraid of somewhat turbulent conditions. There is no sheltered anchorage, and strong current and/or wicked winds are common to the area.

· Golf of Tadjourah is in the center of the country. Much quieter dives in Goubet and the Golf of Tadjourah can be done as a day trip, or organized through a liveaboard dive boat, up to you. Accessible to certified and beginning divers alike, these dives offer multiple profiles : reef passes and faults, wrecks and simple coral gardens. Wildlife is as abundant as in the Seven Brothers, but visibility is often reduced.

In short, ‘a destination not to be missed’, thought our beloved red-capped commander...
