Diving The Dominican Republic

Though the Dominican Republic isn't as famous as its Caribbean neighbours when it comes to diving, there are a few sites well worth mentioning. Enjoy all-inclusive family holidays by spicing it up with an underwater adventure in these beautiful waters! Coral reefs, caves, drop-offs... there are many options depending on where you are staying. We count four main areas for diving in the Dominican Republic:

- Bayahibe, with pristine, aquarium-like waters. What used to be a fishing village is now one of the main seaside resort and it sits right next to the Parque Nacional Del Este reserve, a well preserved coastal ecosystem that provides prime habitat for a number of species of birds, plants, fish and marine mammals! The reef here shelters a very colourful and diverse marine life. It's a true haven for angelfish, turtles, parrotfish, gorgonian fans and sponges! A perfect setting for all divers and snorkellers alike!

- Boca Choca is for the thrill seekers! Located close to Caleta National Park, this destination offers caves and wreck diving: the Hickory, the Ocean Spring and El Limon are quite famous for the extraordinary amount of life that has settled on them and their convenient location. If you're into deep diving try 'Nitrox Garden', a dive site with a coral bed all the down to 40 meters! Then if you feel like cave diving, dive 'La Sirena', a site that features stalactites at only 8 meters deep!

- Isla Catalina is a great day trip. The marine life there is quite abundant and will please divers of all levels.

- Sosua... features very long beaches of fine sand, some of the bests in the country! There are several dive centres that organise whale watching tours in February...

Like we said: the Dominican Republic is full of surprises!
