Diving Madeira - The Atlantic's best kept secret!

Madeira Island, an archipelago in the North Atlantic south of Portugal, home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, several eco marine parks and winner of the 2015 Best Island Destination award, is an outstanding scuba diving destination and haven for an endless variety of marine flora and fauna as well as being one of the best spots for whale and dolphin watching. With the nearby  Azores it makes the largest whale sanctuary in the world!

Madeira offers warm, year round climate including with mild winters and long summers. It is known and loved for its gastronomy, culture and endemic flora and fauna as well as being home to the largest Laurisilva forest in the world, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two thirds of the archipelago is protected, like the Garajau Nature Reserve and the Funchal Eco Marine Reserve.

The island is at the top of a volcano on the Tore underwater mountain range and is fringed by reefs full of a diverse marine life. Diving access is easy, offering both shore dives and boat dives. Some of the best diving can be found in Porto Santo with its unexpected tropical setting and the O Madeirense wreck. Ilheu de Baixo and Ilheu de Clima are rocky islets with excellent diving conditions; Ponta de Sao Laurenco has only recently been explored and offers untoucheddive spots; the Funchal Marine Reserve is yet another popular diving spot.

Sandy, rocky bottoms and clear waters with over 20m visibility welcome divers for an action packed dive trip with barracudas, monkfish, stingrays, groupers, salps, seabream and often mobula rays or manta rays! By far the highlight of diving in Madeira is the opportunity to dive andsnorkel with dolphins in their natural environment as well as making a life long dream come true by joining a whale watching excursion! You'll be humbled by sperm whales, sei whales and the short-finned pilot whale amongst others.
