Diving in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is an exotic, diverse and beautiful island within the Coral Triangle of the Asia Pacific region. With exquisite diving conditions and an infinite variety of marine life and corals, makes this spot a world class dive destination that should be high up there on your list of places to dive!

Surrounded by several different water bodies such as the Pacific Ocean, Bismarck Sea, Solomon Sea, Coral Sea and the Arafura Sea, its not hard to understand why Papua New Guinea is home to such a multitude of rich marine life. The surrounding dive sites are known to have double the fish species of the Red Sea and almost ten times more coral species than the Caribbean Sea!

New divers will enjoy superb visibility, warm waters, giant soft corals and numerous sheltered and calm dive sites such as Kimbe Bay and Port Moresby, with great diving conditions. Advanced and deep divers will be blown away by the sheer walls and drop-offs surrounding the island quite close to shore. Drift diving in Kavieng brings in large pelagics such as eagle rays, mobula rays, dog toothed tuna, gray reef sharks and even hammerheads.

Underwater photographers and macro lovers will be in their element diving amongst ghost pipefish,panda clownfish and mantis shrimp as well as sea whips and leather corals and and Milne Bay is incredible for muck diving. Wreck divers get yourself over to Rabaul for some exploration and immerse yourself amongst the big shipwrecks found here in this World War II battle zone. Great wrecks can also be found in Kavieng (Der Yang) and Milne Bay (P38 Lightening) and if you want to dive an underwater fjord then don’t miss diving in Tufi which is also home to the B17 Black Jack wreck. The great thing about Papua New Guinea is that that you can choose to join a live aboard excursion out to the East field and Portlock reefs or simply stay on the mainland and shore dive to your hearts galore!
