Diving Sint Maarten / Saint Martin
The island of Sint Maarten or Saint-Martin lies to the north east of the West Indies. What singles out the island from its neighbours is a border right down the middle, with a French side to the north and a Dutch side to the south. The islands nearby, Anguilla and Saint-Barthelemy, actually belong to the same underwater plateau... Most of the coastline is quite cut out with lots of coves and large bays; the main ones are Marigot Bay, Philipsburg Bay and 'Baie de l'Embouchure' or River Mouth Bay. The rest of the coast features some steep cliffs about 40 meters high.
ScubaDiving in Saint-Martin is pretty easy with very convenient and accessible dive sites like 'Groupers', 'Isabella' or shipwrecks like the HMS Proselyte in Philipsburg bay, the tug boat Tintamarre or the purpose-sank Corib Ghost in a vertical position! Check out the dive spots from Saba, you'll dive amongst big sponges, along ridges and through pinnacles. Go to the neighboring Saint-Eustache island and discover some 18th century anchors and canons; dive Saint-Christophe and explore the River Taw and the Talalashipwrecks, along with the reef system on 'Paradise Reef'. Groupers Island, between Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy, is the ideal site if you're looking for adventure: only accessible in fair weather, there's not many people diving it... Enjoy!
