Diving Koh Tao, Gulf of Thailand - Thailand

Koh Tao, also known as the Turtle Island, is one of the main diving destinations in Thailand and is popular year round. It has many shallow reefs with plenty of marine life making it very popular with beginner divers, however, there are plenty of great dives for more experienced divers too.

Some of the most well known dive sites for beginners include Mango Bay, Twins, and White Rock. Two other spots, Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock are worth mentioning in more details:

  • Chumphon is one of the most requested sites for a deeper dive where whale-sharks, black tip reef sharks and schools of barracudas can often be seen. There used to be frequent sightings of bull sharks... so keep an eye out!
  • Closer to the neighboring island of Koh Phangan. Sail Rock is an 'all-in-one' dive site for pelagic fauna and fish density: manta rays, whale-sharks, leopard sharks, big schools of yellow-striped snappers... Divers go out on a day trip, on fixed dates. Do not miss out!

Sunrise, sunset and night dive trips are available on one of the 20 different dive sites on offer. The main attractions here are the reef sharks, the hawksbill and green turtles, and a thriving reef life. Whale-sharks are most likely to be seen from August onwards until the monsoon season in November and December.
